Celebrate the 20th anniversary of VELVET GOLDMINE with Miami Film Festival community partners, Flaming Classics.  Todd Haynes’ ode to glam, glitter, and deafening music is a queer classic. The film follows reporter Arthur Stuart who begrudgingly accepts an assignment about Brian Slade, a Bowie-esque rock star. Haynes explores the myth of Slade through CITIZEN KANE inspired flashbacks as Arthur searches for the man behind the legend.

Full of spectacle VELVET GOLDMINE is infused with passion and kinetic energy.  The film explores identity, reinvention and the symbiotic relationship between fandom and stardom.  VELVET GOLDMINE is a tale of obsession, desire, and self-destruction.  Starring Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Ewan McGregor, Toni Collette, Eddie Izzard and Christian Bale.  Featuring a post-screening performance by Persephone Von Lips.  Presented on 35mm.

Todd Haynes

Todd Haynes is an American independent film director, screenwriter, and producer. He is considered a pioneer of the New Queer Cinema movement of filmmaking that emerged in the early 1990s. Velvet Goldmine (1998), is a tribute to the 1970s glam rock era, drawing heavily on the rock histories and mythologies of David Bowie,  Iggy Pop, and Lou Reed. The film received the Special Jury Prize for Best Artistic Contribution at the 1998 Cannes Film Festival and an Academy Award nomination for Best Costume Design.
